Sea Grant Water Resources Lead

Dr. Karen Bareford is the Sea Grant Water Resources Lead. She works with The University of Alabama’s Alabama Water Institute, Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium, and the National Sea Grant College Program. She received a BS in Public Affairs, and a MS in Outdoor Recreation with an emphasis in environmental education and leadership, both from Indiana University. Her Ph.D. is in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University. Dr. Bareford has more than 16-years’ experience working with stakeholders, while managing a variety of projects related to the protection and management of coastal and water resources. These efforts have involved collaboration with various levels of local, county, state, and national representatives, the public, site managers, and other partners. Dr. Bareford’s current work focuses on providing leadership on water resource initiatives and efforts within the Sea Grant network and engaging with NOAA and external partners and stakeholders. Her combination of experience and education enable her unique ability to work across organizational boundaries to better serve the public.
