The Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology, or CIROH, is excited to welcome Kayla Roberson as its new communications specialist student intern.

Roberson is a senior in the Accelerated Master’s Program at The University of Alabama, obtaining her degree in advertising with a minor in digital consumer engagement. She has been working with CIROH since spring 2024 and will continue until spring 2025.

As a communications specialist intern, Roberson is responsible for creating feature articles, social media posts and flyers that highlight CIROH researchers and their findings. During her years at the University, she has developed an interest in writing, social media management and graphic design. She is excited to combine her work from the College of Communication and Information Sciences with water research.

“Aside from writing and communications, I’ve always had a love for science,” Roberson said. “Institutes like AWI and CIROH on campuses are so important, because all people, but especially young people, need to know about hydrology. They need to know that it isn’t just something that scientists research for fun; it affects our daily lives. I am excited to help bring this knowledge to my peers and a larger number of people, to help aid in the understanding that this really does and should matter to everyone.”

Although she has not yet had the opportunity to attend any events in her short time with CIROH, she looks forward to seeing how AWI and CIROH interact and share with The University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa communities.

“I believe that because of AWI and CIROH, if they put in the effort, students will leave this university with a more in depth understanding of not only water, but the world around them as well,” she said. “Through my role, I am so excited to be a part of that teaching process.” Roberson works under CIROH executive director Dr. Steve Burian, communications director Zach Krauss, and multimedia specialist and writer Brock Parker.
